The Viola Liuzzo Scholarship
Created in remembrance of Viola Liuzzo’s contribution to society and her sacrifice. A mother, Detroiter, Wayne State University Student, and an activist, Liuzzo gave her life for civil rights calling the struggle “everybody’s fight.” After “Bloody Sunday,” Liuzzo traveled from Detroit to Alabama to participate in the successful Selma to Montgomery March. On March 25, 1965, Liuzzo shuttled marchers home from Montgomery. On a rural highway, she and her passenger Leroy Morton, were attacked by the Ku Klux Klan firing guns into her car. Liuzzo was shot and killed. This $1,500 scholarship uplifts her memory in the name of truth and freedom for all.
